FRESH details have emerged over the late former President Robert Mugabe’s final resting place amid reports that former Reserve Bank Governor Gedion Gono persuaded the Mugabe family to allow him to be buried at the Heroes Acre, the Zim Morning Post has learnt.
Sources told this publication that Gono met the Mugabe family and the Zvimba chiefs who had earlier on indicated that they wanted the former veteran leader to be buried at his rural home.
“The final decision only came after Gono, who was Mugabe’s closest friend (Sahwira) prevailed against the chiefs and family.
“Gono made it clear that Mugabe was a nationalist, struggle stalwart and a decorated hero who can only be buried at the Heroes Acre,” said the source.

Insiders also said Gono has always been a regular visitor to the Mugabes and as early as February this year he shared lunch with them celebrating Mugabe’s 95th birthday.
Zim Morning Post managed to get a couple of pictures of Gono and the Mugabes as they celebrated the veteran leader’s birthday at the Blueroof.
Sources also said after the meeting with family and chiefs in Zvimba on Saturday Gono was then tasked to relate the same message to the former first lady Grace Mugabe.
Efforts to get a comment from Gono were in vain as his mobile phone went unanswered.
