Minaj said in June that she planned to marry boyfriend Kenneth “Zoo” Petty, 41, and in August she changed her Twitter name to Mrs Petty, but did not say whether a wedding had taken place.
The Starships singer burst onto the music scene 10 years ago with her first album Pink Friday and is known for her outspoken comments, feuds with other singers, colourful wigs and alter egos.
First album a ‘rare sight’
She made her debut on the Billboard charts in 2009 with I Get Crazy, entering with a number eight ranking.
Pink Friday debuted at the second spot of the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, selling 375,000 copies within the first week of its release in November 2010.
It reached the number one spot six weeks later in a move Billboard dubbed “a rare sight” in a 2011 article about the rapper.
“For the most part, an album is only number one on the Billboard 200 because it debuted there,” the report read.
“It’s unusual for an album to climb to the top.”
Pink Friday went platinum for the third time in March 2016 and has sold three million copies across the US, according to figures from the Recording Industry Association of America.
One of only a handful of female rappers, she won six American Music Awards, became a controversial judge on American Idol and was included on the 2016 Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.
Fifth album deadline
In 2014, she told Complex her biggest fear was becoming so focused on her work that she would “forget to live my personal life to the fullest”.
“If I’m done with my fifth album and I don’t have a child by then, no matter how much money I have, I would be disappointed, as a woman, because I feel like I was put here to be a mother,” she told the magazine.
“I have definitely put off the wife thing because I don’t want people in my business.
“I’d rather not do anything that’s going to be on paper but I definitely will be married before I have my baby.”
Minaj has released four studio albums, with her last being Queen in 2018.
She hinted about the release of a new album during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in June.
“Of course there’s a new album, I just don’t know… I’m not putting out a date yet, but there is one,” she said.
Minaj’s fans were stunned by the news of her retirement.
“She really just up and left,” said a fan called MICAH on Twitter.
“This is my cue to leave earth,” wrote Bubbles.
